This was our second hike for the day after starting the day by hiking up Camelback Mountain earlier in the morning. We first headed to the Sunrise Trailhead but there was no parking space available in the main parking lot nor in the overflow/equestrian parking. So we headed to the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead as the signs recommended.
The parking at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead was plentiful, we had no problems finding parking. Best of all, the trail would still connect with Sunrise Peak and it only made the hike slightly longer but not by much. At the trailhead, a staff member provided us a map and gave us an overview of what to expect on the trail and how to get to Sunrise Trail. Following his directions and confirming it with the map and the signs on the trail made the hike an enjoyable experience. Although this hike was twice as long as the Camelback hike in terms of mileage, it was actually easier considering that we did not have to do significant bouldering unlike at Camelback and this trail was more gradual compared with the Echo Canyon ascent up Camelback. The hike on the ridge was enjoyable. It was sunny and clear skies. An intermittent strong breeze kept the hike cool and not hot. As it was our first time to hike this trail and preserve we took note of the signs at each trail intersection.
We got to the summit at around noon or shortly after 12:00 PM. Earlier on our way up, several of the hikers we met coming down had told us that it was windy at the summit but worth the hike. When we got there ourselves it was no longer windy and the view was just as excellent. We saw some hikers there who had come from the main Sunrise Trailhead and others who came from Lost Dog. Even though we met several hikers and runners during the hike it did not feel crowded at all. The hike back was relaxing. We got back to the trailhead 15 minutes after 2:00 PM. An excellent end to a midday hike at Sunrise and a good finish to two excellent hikes for the day.
