In honor of my fellow veterans I decided to celebrate with a ruck march. I went back to Volcan Peak after taking the summer and early fall off to restart my challenge. Got to the trailhead at about 8:15am and there were about six cars there. It was a beautifully clear day with awesome views of San Diego (43 miles away) and the Salton Sea (45 miles away) and beyond. I could even make out individual buildings in San Diego with the naked eye as well as Point Loma.
The trail was in good shape. It was wet but hard-packed, and there was only one wash-out of note (but the trail was still passable in that spot). I took Five Oaks trail up and the main trail down. The weather was cool, 46 degrees, mostly sunny, and a strong breeze blowing especially at the peak. You could see some fall foliage but it was not impressive. Mostly light browns.
I passed many people heading up while I was on my way down. I got back to the trailhead at 11:30 and there were at least 30 cars parked at the entrance. I was able to capture many great photos along the way.
Cuyamaca is next!
