Baldy has a well-earned reputation for being tough and dangerous but it's also a delight of a mountain if the hikers know their path, are in good shape, and stick to the plan. I finally got to take (what I consider) the best route up Mount Baldy with my hiking buddy: up past the ski hut, up the Baldy bowl, across the summit, and down the devil's backbone to the notch and then down the road to the parking area. It was a perfect day for a hike. Chilly and more windy than expected but nothing to complain about. I am happy because the endeavor was a success: we're now committed to hiking Baldy more regularly, and with a smile. Lot so people hiking up and around, with endless trail wear and erosion. But otherwise it was delightful. The train was in good shape. The guy hiking behind us saw a bighorn sheep. We didn't and felt much jealousy as a result. I am happy we made it to Baldy before any winter weather closed in on the peak.
