Decided to do this 5 mile hike after a 10 mile road run in the morning. I did not arrive until around 12:15 p.m.- it was already very hot. I had my hydration pack (3 liters of water) and my hiking poles since I knew it would be a steep climb to the lookout area. The bathrooms at the entrance of the preserve were very clean and had sinks inside. We parked on the road (dirt side) in front of the trail head. I started my Garmin from the road. There was very little shade throughout the hike and most was exposed. There was a lookout approximately .5 from the summit. There was no sign to hold but I did find the marker that indicated the summit.
The hiking poles did help tremendously since I was tired from the morning run. Afterwards, I went to Julian for a cold beer and purchased a Pecan Pie from the Julian Pie Company. This was a short hike and highly recommend a stroll through Julian afterwards.
