I thought Volcan was going to be an easy hike to finish the challenge with. Was I mistaken! A fire road straight up, no reprieve until close to the summit. A lot of meadow but also a ton of bugs. Wore my head net the whole way. Somehow, they still bit me through my clothing, and I was itchy for days. It was bright and sunny, a bit warm for all the inclines. We took the side trail that came up less than a mile on the side of the road. This added about a mile but so glad we did. It was much nicer hiking the trail through the trees and shade and getting a few view spots of Julian below. After that portion, we met up with the fire road again. then we got to the meadow leading up to the summit. There's no official marker or signage to indicate you've arrived at the summit. There's a picnic table and you can walk around enjoying the views. There are also some plaques that told you the names of the peaks. And the remnants of a house, only the chimney. There was a large group of people, perhaps 15 or so that passed us up by intervals of smaller sub-groups. When we arrived at the summit, they had already taken over the picnic table with a smorgasbord of food. Nice planning on their part, carting up real food to enjoy. Went back down the same way because it was a pretty trail and I enjoyed the shade. Down at the bottom is a winery and as this was our last hike to complete the challenge, we considered stopping in for a celebratory glass of wine. Unfortunately, time did not allow this to happen, so we are going to have a much better celebration next week. I see margaritas in my future!
