Today, I decided to summit Mt Wilson via the Santa Anita Canyon. I had previously climbed this popular peak by taking the Sturtevant Trail, but I wanted a new challenge for this particular hike (not to mention that the aforementioned Sturtevant Trail is currently closed due to fire damage).
Wilson is always a calve-killer, but what makes it all the more strenuous is its notorious lack of switchbacks and barely any reprieve as nearly every step is on an incline.
Unlike my previous Mt Wilson climb, I opted to not take any substantial breaks until I made it to the summit.
Nearly 5000 feet and 7 miles later, I had finally approached the peak. I immediately took to the Observatory (as it was not open during my 2020 trek) and visited the famous 100-inch (Hooker) Telescope. Next I checked out the Exhibit Hall, before heading to the survey marker to get some pictures.
Lastly, I was finally able to take my official break at the Cosmic Cafe amongst many other successful hikers.
The hike back down wasn’t too bad, but after a rather treacherous climb, it still felt abnormally long and exhausting.
All in all, Wilson is considered the redheaded stepchild of the Original Six, but does offer an experience that the others do not… pain.
Just kidding!
