I originally planned on hiking this mountain Saturday morning, leaving me with a very ambitious plan of tackling Bonanza and Fletcher Sunday, then Turtlehead Monday before driving back to California, but Saturday’s sandstorm kinda threw a wrench into that plan, along with anything else those 50-60 mph winds could throw, so I would no longer have time to complete the challenge and have to settle for only climbing four peaks. Oh well, on to Black Mountain and it’s now more tolerable 20-30 mph winds!
This hike was pretty straight forward, and not crazy hard, but not easy. Just steadily climbing along, up, up, up! The last half mile or so was pretty challenging, though. While you don’t necessarily have to scramble on the rocks, you almost are. If you have shorter legs, you might actually have to in some sections. It does get very steep and very rocky. At the top there was a little wind shelter where you’ll find the box with logs to sign. Beautiful views of Vegas and the surrounding areas, including Red Rock Canyon, where I would be stopping by the next morning and Mount Charleston towering above it!
One side note, but very important, there are no restrooms on this trail or at the trailhead. Be sure to go before you go!
