Back for my second year, and I started off with Mount Baldy. Now I'd summited Baldy several times now, but never when there was snow up there. It did not disappoint.
The trail up to Ski Hut was clear of snow, in fact it was rather warm until just below the ski hut, when the wind was started to be obvious. Pass the hut the trail disappeared and the snow took over. Several hikers turned around and the hut and only two of us continued on.
From the hut to the saddle was particularly challenging and on the way down I did lose my footing and slide around 15 meters. Must admit, that was kind of fun!
- The hike to the summit was tough, even with crampons – although you could wear microspikes. The summit was as windy as hell. It was difficult to even stand, even take photos. But I do love Baldy and the added challenge of the snow made it hugely enjoyable! But one that, unless you are experienced – choose caution.
