This was a three peak day…Middle Peak, Cuyamaca Peak, and Stonewall Peak.  We started at the intersection of Highway 79 and Milk Ranch Road.  There is free parking at this starting location.  We hiked a short distance up Milk Ranch Road and then took the Middle Peak Loop Fire Road up to Middle Peak.  We soon encountered snow along the trail.  The snow was not too deep, but we did find micro-spikes helpful.  One nice thing about hiking in the snow is you get to see many footprints from the animals that live in the area.  There is definitely a mountain lion roaming the trails that we were on today.  We followed Black Oak Trail down to Azalea Springs Fire Road to begin our ascent up to Cuyamaca Peak.  The main trail that we took to Cuyamaca Peak was Conejos Trail.  This is a beautiful trail.  Parts of this trail are rocky.  With the melting snow, there was water flowing down the rocky sections.  Conejos Trail interests Lookout Road as you near the top of the peak.  Lookout Road is an asphalt service road.  There was some snow on the service road, but luckily it was not icy.  There was no sign to be found at the peak today…some days there is a sign.  We then took Lookout Road all the way back down to the Paso Picacho Campground.  Lookout Road is probably the quickest way down from Cuyamaca Peak, but it is not very interesting (my least favorite route.). We ended our day by hiking up to Stonewall Peak and then back over to the cars.
