One of my favorite trails in the snow! After summitting Hot Springs in the morning snow, we headed over to Oak Grove to summit High Point in the afternoon snow. We began our hike at about 1130am. Mild temps, maybe in the mid 50's. There is not snow for the first 2 miles as you head up to the Oak Grove Truck Trail and very little snow for about the first 15 miles or so hiking up the truck trail. After that we put on our spikes. The snow was melting a little so it was soft and slushy in several spots on the way up. There was easily a foot or so of snow on the upper portion of the trail and near the summit. For the most part we had the trail to ourselves. Maybe 2 or 3 hikers heading down as we went up. No a soul at the summit when we got there.
We hit the summit around 3:30pm. It was starting to get a little chilly and windy. After a quick bite to eat and some photos, we made our way down. Going down, the cold air was beginning to harden the snow and the mud. There were several areas of mud patches where trucks and bikes had driven/rode through. Our hike ended in the dark just after 6pm.
