For my first hike of this year and to start off 2021 NE Six Pack of Peaks Challenge I decided to climb Mount Chocorua, one pf the new peaks on the challenge list.

Mount Chocorua is located in the easternmost part of Sandw Range Wilderness. Although only 3,478 ft tall, this rocky, exposed summit offers incredible 360 degree views on surrounding mountains, lakes and forests. Fun fact: on clear day, 36 of 48 NH 4000 footers are visible from this peak.

I took Champney Falls trail. It's 3.7 miles from trailhead to the summit (3.1 miles on Champney Falls trail and 0.6 miles on Piper trail). This route is pretty gradual with some switchbacks towards the summit. Last 0.4 miles is very rugged and hard since it scrambles along the rocky barren summit and can be really tricky when windy. After 1.4 miles on Champney Falls trail there is optional side trail to beautiful Champney falls, which I skipped this time.

It was snowing from the start, first lightly, and turned to proper winter storm when I reached the summit. Wind gusts were between 30-40 mph, so getting on the summit wasn't easy. Wind chill was down to 10ish degrees. Due the unfavorable weather, visibility was poor, 50 ft at most, so I was not able to enjoy some of the best views in the Whites. I spent 10-15 minutes on the summit and descended the same way I came.

Although I didn't get any views I still enjoyed this hike, since this mountain is one of my favorites.

    1. Yeah, it was pretty interesting day. Wasn’t really that dangerous, but it’s always good to be cautious. Cheers.
