Ascent of Sugarloaf Peak and Ontario Peak via Falling Rock Canyon. Some class 2 and class 3 scrambling up to Sugarloaf, but mostly a slog through the snow pack. Pretty dense enough to traverse with crampons, but did get some postholing in places. Sugarloaf Peak appears to have a “false” summit although we were fairly sure the false summit is higher than the official summit.
Sugarloaf to Ontario was an ultimate slog. Over 1000 feet per mile of vertical gain, sometimes through the snow. Often the boot tracks would disappear so you would need to find where to connect to them again. Little shade on this section, so I imagine it would get quite hot during the summer months. Once you reach the sub-peak, it gets much less steep, however with the snowpack the snow began to really blind us. The trail eventually meets up with the normal Ontario Peak trail and is much more tame then.
In the snow, return trail via the standard Ontario Peak route felt overly long. Boot tracks did not seem to actually go anywhere at points, so it felt like we were going in circles.
Overall, really tough day but some good training.
