Well, it wasn't my first rodeo. I once had a friend ditch me on this trail for not being well equipped. I went on my own another time, but only got to mile 4 and turned back. Today, I had not only a snack bag and fannypack containing 2 water bottles. I had a hydrogen pack carried on my back. I had plenty of fluids and enough time to enjoy the scenery. El Capitan is no walk in the park. The broken land masses and long row of rocks, and loose gravel, can make one really slow their footing. Going up the steep washout grade can even make a hiker feel light headed. Though, the views are spectacular! I loved some of the leaves that were lavender colored. The peak may not be much of a sight, but it's still a nice landmark well earned. It was a daunting task, but after years of coming to the El Capitan Open Preserve, I have made it all the way to the top of El Cajon Mountain. I'm pleased with the results.

  1. Great job! I bet it felt great to finally make it to the top! It’s smart but disappointing to have to turn back due to gear issues, I’ve been there. Congratulations on your summit 🙂

    1.   Hello, Emma. Thank you very much. It was years of practice finally paid in full. I knew how in the past, I used to think I was running on clouds at El Cajon Mountain. It was a rude waking after a few tormenting, long steep slopes. I realized by getting out there, on the day of the time change, the odds would be in my favor. I did it well before the heat advisory tended to come up that turned many hikers away. I am so pleased and looking forward to clearing my 3 remaining peaks. 😀
