I started out around 830 with the idea I’d make it to the top in no time. I had climbed this hill last year but never made it to the top so this time I’d finish. My dogs kept me going on as they run ahead and look back with this look like….ummm hurry please. We would climb then stop to take a breath. Half way up we stopped for a water break under some trees. It was breath taking even though I was trying to catch my breath. The views were truly inspiring.
we kept climbing arriving at the place I stopped last year. Decision time keep going or give up. It was only 1/2 mile but that 1/2 mile was the hardest part. So the dogs and I talked and decided we had to finish. So one step in front of the other we went. After 45 minutes we arrived, tired, thirsty, sore and the question in my mind…was it worth it???
Resoundingly yes!!! The views are impressive. You can see to the ocean and all around you. So the dogs and I sat under a tree and took it all in. We drank water and caught our breath. Ah heaven.
But then, we have to get down. So we started our descent faster than our ascent. We made it down after a few slips and navigated our way back. The creek running was a welcomed sight as the dogs jumped in to cool off. We finished our hike and had rewards for all waiting. Good for them, food for me, more water and the realization we were going home!

Is this trail now officially open?
The trial starts in an open section and only crosses into Los Padres at the top.
Thanks for the info! Congrats on making it!
It looks to me like the last 1/2 mile to the peak is in the Los Padres National Forest. If that portion is closed, you will risk incurring a fine. Altrails still has this as a closed trail and (I haven’t checked yet), but if you call the local ranger station, they will likely confirm it is still closed and scheduled to reopen sometime in early March.
