I wanted to sneak in a Peak challenge before the game kicks off and avoid the crowd. Maple Springs 4×4 road is in good condition some small whoops but no concerns, 2wd all the way in my Tacoma. Started the hike at 7:45, onboard thermometer said 35 degrees but felt like low 40's. The wind was chilling when it sporadically picked but I was comfortable with a base layer, wind jacket, wool beanie and gloves. Still some icy hard snow near the summit. I think I experienced some mild altitude sickness after reaching the summit – felt dizzy, numb, slight headache, rush of anxiety. Decided I should keep moving and head back, by 5000 feet I was feeling much better. Finished the hike in 3 hours but in retrospect I could have taken my time on the ascent. Pretty much had the trail to myself until about 9:30-10 when traffic began to pick up: off-roaders, lots of MTB and dirt bikes, a few hikers. The biggest challenge might have been avoiding oncoming traffic on the way off the mountain. On sharp blind turns consider honking your horn to give a heads up to any drivers whipping it around the corners. Overall, amazing picturesque views, well groomed and accessable if busy trail. Excellent start to the 6PC.
