The hike began under azure blue skies, with temperatures in the 60s, eventually rising to near 100F by the conclusion of the hike. The shade afforded by the North Wilson Trail flora and intermittent invigorating breezes provided a welcome respite from the heat. Views were extraordinary from the start, with impressive rock walls and unobstructed vistas once out of the canyon and headed up to the First Bench, but nothing prepared me for the absolutely magnificent views from the end of the trail, which are beyond compare.
After savoring that sublime spot, I reluctantly being the descent. I ended up taking a bit of a detour and followed the N Canyon Overlook Trail to a ridge, heading off-trail to explore the area that appeared to be Wilson Mtn.’s highest point. In the process, I startled a bull elk, which quickly vanished into the brush. After satisfying my curiosity about the summit ridge, I resumed my descent, grateful for the memorable experience in such a tremendous place.
The trail is well constructed and in good shape. While overgrown in places, it was not difficult to follow. In addition to the Red Rock Pass, Interagency Passes (Annual, Senior, Access, Golden Age Access) are honored for parking at the Encinoso Picnic Area.
