It was a Winter Wonderland at Mt Diablo today. However, it was a very difficult trail for me. I did not have the experience necessary to hike this trail efficiently and mishap free. It was very slippery from mud, ice, and snow on steep and rocky inclines. At times, the trail was very narrow and a slip could have been injurious or fatal. I urge you to consider your skill level during this rainy and snowy winter season before embarking on any Moderate to Hard level trail.
I was going to meet my ride at the summit for a lunch break and then head back to the trail head at Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center. However, I couldn't help myself and stopped a lot to take pictures and then was slowed down by mud and snow. I knew I wasn't going to be able to complete the loop before dark. My plan to end the trip at the summit was foiled because Summit Road was closed at Juniper Campground. I actually enjoyed the extension of my hike to the campground and ended at the perfect time and distance for me.
I must say this is going on my top ten day hike list. The views were breath taking. The trail was a winter wonderland, a rare treat for the Bay Area. I loved it. I learned a lot about myself and capabilities. I gained more experience and improved my skills.
I can't wait to go on the next adventure and peak.
