Started up the Dipsea / Steep Ravine trail and spent the night at Pantoll. On summit day, my son found a dying mouse in the trail. We cut down a water bottle with a pocket knife and tucked him comfortably inside with some Kleenex. I slipped him into the flat part of my day pack to keep him upright right next to the water to help regulate temperature. We checked on him throughout the hike, and he seemed to revive a little bit, but after reaching the visitor's center near the top, we discovered our little passenger had died. Not wanting to have our summit marred by death, the secret was kept until we stopped for a picnic on the way back down. So our little friend was there with us at the top, summiting with us. We buried our friend at the foot of a redwood near camp, and marked his grave with a special stone carefully selected for the occasion.
