Today was the Comeback Climb for Heroes after the one last month was canceled due to snow. Because of the schedule changes, not as many people came to do this one. But, it was a beautiful day with no snow and not too many people on the mountains.
We started up from the ski lift early because the turn around time was 2 pm. There are 4 camps you pass and the summit where you get chips and the chips turned in at the end, get you free things. They mostly gave the free things away at the canceled event, but still had some good swag at the end.
One of my group members is acrophobic, but she wants to overcome it by doing the 6 Peaks. She did Wilson and Cucamonga two years ago, but did not complete the challenge. I explained in detail about Mt.Baldy trail for this event and the infamous Devil’s Backbone and she still insisted on doing this event.
We make it up to the Backbone and she looks out at the trail. She pretty much started hyperventilating and going into an anxiety attack right there. Then, we met Patrick and his team on the way up. He is part of the Heroes Project and is doing the climb today to prepare for his ascent of the largest mountain in Iran. Patrick’s team quickly calmed my friend down and supported her when they saw her on the trail.
The rest of the volunteers for this event were amazing with her too. They got her through the narrow pass on the Backbone and helped her down the trail. But, she did it! It took longer than we liked to do this climb, but today the Climb for Heroes event was amazing and The Heroes Project’s volunteers and staff were supportive by helping everyone get up and down the mountain safely.
