My group and I got an early start on hiking up Humphreys. From the trailhead, we could see that some fall color was starting to appear as we crossed the meadow and headed into the forest. The trail was pretty busy and there were several trail runners that passed us. We made our way up, and upon reaching the saddle, I was really excited to see that the fall color on the north side of the mountains was incredible. The aspens were definitely showing off. Once above the tree line, my pace slowed down and I started focusing on making it to the closest trail marker. The false summits were teasing me, but then the true summit appeared and I made my way to it pretty quickly (or at least, it felt pretty quick). My friends and I enjoyed a break, some food, and the beautiful fall color to the north. We happily got some photos and took in the views. A cloudless sky let us see the Grand Canyon and Flagstaff from a new angle and as a Lumberjack, I appreciated being able to see the Skydome from the top of Humphreys. Surprisingly, there was hardly any wind at the top, which made for perfect weather.
While at the summit, we enjoyed the company of other hikers there, as we discussed the foods we WISHED we hadn't left in the car (NEVER leave the cheetos in the car!). We made our way back down the mountain, and were pleasantly surprised to see that the trees near the trailhead had gotten even more vibrant throughout the day. The foliage on Kendrick looked incredible from our view point, and it was really fun to think that we'd also summited that mountain just a few weeks ago.
I was happy to have left Humphreys for my last hike of the Six-Pack, and was lucky to get perfect weather for it.
