Flatiron Peak Hike via Siphon Draw Trail. Dec 30, 2019 @7:56 AM. Total Distance: 8.6 miles*. Elevation Gain: 3,280 ft.
This hike requires a great amount of physical stamina and mental focus, as you’ll be ascending 1,000 vertical feet over the last mile that requires scrambling up steep rocks, but once you’re at the plateau you're rewarded with a 360° view of all the mountain ranges surrounding the Phoenix area.
(*my GPS watch tracked me erratically through the scrambling section so the total distance is actually closer to 7 miles).
Additional notes:
- DO NOT make this a sunset hike. It’s tough enough ascending in the daytime, but descending in the dark is outright dangerous, even with a headlamp
- Leave your trekking poles at home; they’re useless on this hike
- Gloves will make the scrambling easier on your hands. Work gloves with a grip will work (only about $5 at Home Depot)
