2022 – Sitton Peak
Squeaking in Peak #6 at the very last minute! Determined to finish the Challenge, I headed out today to Sitton Peak in the rain. A persistent drizzle all day slowly snuck up me; it never really poured, but it never stopped, either. I wore my smart wool base layer under my rain shell and was probably just as wet as if I’d left the rain shell at home; however, the beauty of smart wool is that despite being sweat-soaked, it kept me warm as long as I was moving.
I packed my Gossamer Gear umbrella but never used it. I did bring my microspikes and put them on at the turn-off to head up to the summit, the mud was horrendous but the spikes made short work of it, and I didn’t slip or lose footing once!
After a brief chat with two other groups at the summit (and taking pictures for them), I headed back down; again, the microspikes were a Godsend on the descent from the summit.
Cheers to another SoCal 6POP in the books!
I hit this yesterday and I could imagine how slippery it woulda been. But those spikes were a great idea!
Thank you for the good information. I’m looking to do this hike this month and was wondering about snow. Much appreciated ????
You bet! This one isn’t likely to get any snow, but the final climb to the summit is a mess with mud if it’s been raining. Microspikes REALLY helped. Have a great hike!
