My hike started out around 7:30am on a Tuesday morning. The trailhead was easily accessible via google maps, there were 4 other cars there when I arrived. There are pit restrooms and a place for you to purchase your day or week pass near the Doe Mountain Trail signage.

After crossing the road, I encountered a cute little gate that allowed me passage into the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. Does anyone know what the secret is?! The trail started through a valley of sorts, up and down a wash, and then turned rocky. This hike is a tough one. No doubt. I loved it!

The trail is well marked in areas – keep your eyes peeled for white markings on the rocks. In other areas, the trail is not well marked at all! You need to pay attention. At one point I did not pay close enough attention and definitely went off trail a bit. Thanks to Strava I was able to find my way back to the trail, but it did seem easy to get off course! At the time I went I had quite a bit of shade in the beginning of hike, but by the time I was coming down the sun was intense. Bring plenty of water, and snacks 🙂

I met a new friend about halfway into the hike. Another solo hiker who was training for a rim to rim adventure in October! Since I had done R2 in June, I was happy to share my experience, answer any questions and give advice! She had also hiked Wilson the day before…so I was also the recipient of some great advice as well! Love meeting new friends on the trail!

Apparently there are a few false summits on this hike – but I only remember one! The rock formations in the last 1.5 miles of the hike are absolutely incredible. And, as aesthetically out of place as I felt the “end of trail” sign was – there are many awesome lookout points at the top. I suggest taking your time and venturing about!

All in all a wonderful, challenging climb with spectacular views. It felt good to check off one of the summits and I can’t wait to get back out for more! I’ll come visit Bear Mountain again!
