Cactus to Clouds
Also on this hike
My first time hiking Cactus to Clouds. It was an amazing experience. Bonuses of the day were: feeling of accomplishment, seeing two big horn sheep early on (also one rattle snake and another snake), hearing and hiking along the river running above Long Valley, climbing around some snow, and views of Palm Springs and the valley. This hike took us 15 hours (includes 6 mini to medium breaks). We left at 5am and wouldn’t recommend any later but also appreciated not hiking in the dark. The beginning of the trail has many opportunities to go on wrong off-shoots, but I understand wanting to escape the heat and not see what lies before you. That rocky mountain can seem daunting but oh so glorious after you conquer it. I carried and drank every drop of the 5L of fluids. I did not fill at the ranger station but water source was available. I recommend sunscreen and having bug spray was nice. I also used microspikes at the top because I don’t like the feeling of slipping but some people did just fine without. Enjoy!!
