Climbing up to the Forest
Also on this hike
We started on Los Coyotes Reservation. Buy your pass in advance at their website, it makes it so much easier.
First part of hike is 2 miles uphill and exposed (wear sunscreen/bring water), then you enter a beautiful forest trail with rolling hills before another steep (but shorter) climb to summit. The gnats were bothersome, especially in the shaded areas of the forest (strongly suggest a mosquito net – the gnats don’t bite but they are really pesty.) The summit itself looked a bit too sketchy to come down so we didn’t climb past the metal ladder to the ropes. We were the only ones there on Monday and enjoyed a nice picnic at the picnic table near the top, enjoying the view. The entire route is on unpaved fire road. Only one rattlesnake and it went on its way warning us with its rattle. Weather was really nice – temps in the 5os with an occasional breeze.
