Icehouse Canyon is my favorite place to hike, and I’ve been there many times, but this was my first time summiting Cucamonga Peak. This is exactly why I signed up for this challenge – to push myself to new limits! The trail was beautiful, like always, and in great condition. There were a few snow patches once I passed the saddle, but nothing serious. Coming back down I was so focused on hiking fast that I almost stepped on a rattlesnake right in the middle of the trail. One more step and it would have bitten me. It coiled up and rattled its tail as I backed away just in time. A very valuable lesson learned – keep my head up and eyes down the trail. I’ll do better in the future. About a mile from the parking lot, I saw a deer heading towards the stream. A great way to end the day.
