I used alltrails recommended “Cuyamaca Peak via Azalea Glen Loop” to summit Cuyamaca. The all trail recommendation was to go up via azalea glen loop (a more scenic route) and come back down lookout road, but we did the opposite. We went up via lookout road which is a paved path with a gradual incline and not very technical at all. I’m really glad we did this. We reached the summit in a little over an hour. After the first two miles, the path is gorgeous with tall, fragrant cedars. The colors on some trees are also starting to change. On the way down we took Conejos trail to Azalea Spring Fire Rd to Azalea Glen Loop. This is highly recommended. It was gorgeous and again, the air was fragrant due to all different types of trees. Be warned of the loose rocks though. I almost tripped multiple times while coming down and the way down is a lot longer than the way up. Also saw a snake a couple really creepy looking lizard/snake hybrid creatures my friend almost stepped on twice! Also, the views on this trail are probably my favorite that I’ve done so far in SoCal.
