Dead grass
The last of my central cal 6 pop is now complete. I really wanted to avoid this one because of the sketch slippery incline ditch climbing portion towards the peak. But as I had plans to hike Caliente a bit ago, my reservation at campground and carizo plains closed due to fires in early Aug. So repeat it was.
Last visit it was spring and the wild flowers and poppies were amazing. The trail was in great condition, but I want to say 2 yrs ago… I think?
This year. Hills are brown and dry, but trail is almost unpassable in some areas as and the claim, so even though I had microspikes on… Was still sketch. Not sure this should be a trail for the challenge in the future. The trail is washed out in many areas and almost no trail exists. Many burned areas and overgrown beyond what I’ve seen in this county.
It’s almost as if it’s closed and they are letting the land take it back. I usually enjoy every trail, in all seasons but this one is a disappointment. That’s a first for me. Summit, like last visit was uneventful. No sign. No flag. No other people out there.
Would love to see this one replaced wit a different mtn. If possible for future challenge
Glad to be done with this one for sure!
Congratulations, Brandi!
And thanks for the feedback. Grass Mountain is (was?) especially beautiful in the spring and was known for the poppies covering the mountainside. We’ll definitely look at providing another alternate peak for 2026.
Thank you Jeff for the congrats. I am a big fan of these challenges and the knowledge you pass on to us. I’ve hiked it when poppies were in full bloom and trail was well maintained…not sure what has changed but I was the only one on the trail and I think an alternate peak is definitely needed. It has changed so very much since my last visit.
