Flying Crows Return to Mount Katahdin
Date: 9/12/2025
Start: 6:40am
End: 6:32pm
Miles: 9.1 miles
This was my 9th Peak for the Six Pack of Peaks: New England Challenge 2025 and has been three years since I had my last summit here. It’s great to be back.
I started my hike from Katahdin Streams Campground up the Hunt Trail(AT – Appalachian Trail). It was a beautiful morning start with winds just above tree-line. A number of hikers turned around due to the windy conditions. Following the trail up the “Gateway”, then up to Baxter Peak Summit. Reached summit and stayed there for a bit before heading back down. Met a couple along the way down from the “Gateway” whom didn’t make it to summit and offered help if they needed it as they were heading back to Katahdin Streams Campground. Weather was perfect. Trails were well traveled and a number of hikers on the trail with more at the summit. There were a number of vistas along the way, 360 views from summit and could see many surrounding peaks off in the distance.
Definitely recommend this hike to others up to summit but if you continue on attempting to reach Pamola via the Knife Edge Trail exercise caution as weather and winds can change. There are many areas where the trail is steep and narrow, as well as areas requiring more technical climbing up and down rock faces. I really enjoyed the challenge and views from Katahdin.
It was a perfect day to make the summit. I couldn’t have asked for better day. It was worth the trip but always be prepared.
