Hiked with a group

Hike starts behind a fire station (Palomar Hotshots) in the little community of Oak Grove (past the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation if coming from Warner Springs).

Hike starts out on a nice trail and then you make a right turn and trail gets pretty rocky.  After 2 hard miles, you come to a small flat area (at a sign that says Oak Grove Trail) before the next climb.  The day was sunny and warm.  This was one of my hardest hikes; harder than El Cajon Mtn for me.   There were a number of dirt bikes on the trail; all very polite.  They had packs on the bikes, so I suspect they were on an adventure, too.   I almost gave one guy $20 to take me to the top, but I saved my $$.   You can see the fire tower from the trail, but it’s not as close as you think it will be.

It was great to get to the top! The tower was closed, so we ate lunch at the base of it.  There’s a few picnic tables at the top.

You can look over to the observatory on Palomar.  Lots of blooming Lord’s Candle plants.

Easier hike down, but there’s a section that super rocky that you can negotiate over, but be careful if you are tired.  We had cool drinks in the cooler for post-hike refreshments; this is definitely a hike that a cold beer would have been a great reward!
