Hiking on the Rez
Also on this hike
The drive from Los Angeles to the trailhead was a challenge for me. There was poor visibility from fog which caused me to pull over for a bit. Once the sun came up I resumed the drive to the Los Coyotes Reservation. There was confusion on my part about registering at the ranger station. I registered in advance but was still instructed to meet at the ranger station. When I arrived there was no one in sight. Worst of all, I had no cell reception and no idea how to find the trailhead (make sure you download the offline map of the area before doing this hike). I followed the road to the end and continued down a dirt road. Thankfully I found the trailhead and a couple that just arrived. The hike is pretty intense for the first couple of miles but after that it is smooth sailing. The summit is a bit tricky to find and you have to climb up a few boulders. The sign at the top is broken and there was no one around to take a photo for me so I had to improvise. All in all this was a nice hike but probably not one I’d do again. At least I can now say that I’ve been to the highest point in San Diego County.
