First time hiking San Bernardino Peak…or is it San BENardino – I was flaunting my peak picture to my wife when she pointed out the typo in the marker…Got to the trailhead around 630AM and there was plenty of parking spots. The first section of the trail was littered with yellow wildflowers with the occasional purple flower. The trail then winds through an extensive burn scar with lots of downed trees across the trail and exposure. The creek just before the campground had ample water to refill. Snow started around the 5 mile mark. Patchy with decent stretches of the trail covered. The last push to the peak is fully covered in snow, though the peak itself is clear. There were some sections that pushed the limits of microspikes, so definitely come prepared and budget for more time. Weather was sunny with a cold breeze at higher altitude. Pants and wool long sleeve shirt were enough to be comfortable. Great hike, definitely recommend.
