At “the resting place of the hummingbird” the sun shone brightly on a glistening green carpet. Trails were well-canopied, and the summit marker–a former radar surveillance tower–was visible from the start.

Gentle switchbacks, three bridges, and stone steps led not only to the Cube but also to my understanding of the mountain’s namesake and its significance to the ancestral Ohlone tribes. Beyond the rock garden (still under restoration) lies a ceremonial circle and a plaque from the 2017 dedication by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District to “the people of the Bay Area, past, present, and future.”
