Humphreys Peak: Always a Little Further
Also on this hike
I will readily admit Humphreys Peak was one of the toughest trails I’ve completed in a long time. Started before 5am but the forest trail was rocky and root-filled, the opposite of Kendrick Peak’s beautiful trail. By the time I reached the saddle I had pretty much run out of gas. The volcanic basin was impressive as the temperature began to climb. The ridge path, was an indistinct rocky “path” to the summit. Wonderful 360 degree views from Arizona’s highest point, especially over to yesterday’s Kendrick Peak and the other distinct volcanoes comprising the San Francisco Peaks. I was very happy to make it back to the meadow and a short pleasant stroll to the car park. Still not sure I’m ready to buy into the minimalist local mindset of carrying only 16oz oz water for the ascent, even although my pack felt like carrying the proverbial kitchen sink. The lesson learned is “less is more” on this beast of a trail.
