Bay Area Hikers to take on a challenging 16.75 mile hike and bag Mt. Umunhum on Saturday the 24th for Bay Area 6 Peak Challenge. We started promptly at 7:45 a.m. with high spirits, good energy, and plenty of conversation as the day got underway.
The weather couldn’t have been better cool temperatures, clear skies, and a light breeze at times. The group took on the challenge ahead with determination and steady pacing. The trail consisted mostly of fire and access roads and was in reasonably good condition throughout.
The mountain was green and lush from recent rains, and the few streams we encountered were flowing nicely. As the miles added up, the group naturally spread out along the trail, but the majority reached the summit around 10:45 a.m.
At the top, we celebrated with a well-earned 30-minute break, lunch, and victory photos at the summit. Afterward, the hike resumed as we made our descent. On the way down, the main group passed another group that had started a bit later but was closing in on the summit. Congratulations were exchanged, and both groups continued on their way.
We returned to our cars around 1:30 p.m., wrapping up one of the fastest long hikes I’ve completed in quite some time.
In total, the hike took approximately 5 hours and 45 minutes, including a 30-minute lunch and a few short breaks. We covered 16.75 miles and gained about 3,018 feet of elevation an excellent day on the trail and a strong group effort all around.
