Leery of O’Leary
Also on this hike
We were slightly leery of O’Leary Peak simply because of the distance. But, in the end, it wasn’t all that bad!
We started at 7am and °51 and windy. Beautiful, crisp, blue sky morning in Flagstaff! The first mile of the fire road was fairly flat and uneventful. The elevation gain started during mile 2 and then really kicked up for the last 1.4 miles to the summit.
You are surrounded by giant ponderosa pines until you get high enough to start seeing the surrounding peaks…. including Humphreys. There wasn’t much for fall foliage on O’Leary, but we could see it on Humphreys in the distance.
It’s a 5 mile hike to the summit. There’s a picnic table under the fire tower that was lovely for our summit snacks. Although, it was super windy and cold up there! And, quite honestly, the views from the summit are not ideal because there are trees all around semi blocking the views. We found better views and pics on the way up.
We finished in 5 hours and this was the first time that we actually matched what AllTrails said. Lol.
