When I arrived at the Mt Saint Helena trailhead parking lot off Highway 29 there was only one other car. It was 8:30 AM on an early October Monday morning. A light jacket was all that was necessary even though there was a strong and cold wind at the very top.  The first mile or so of the hike is somewhat technical – lots of switchbacks and rocky sections. That technical trail then intersects with a fire/service road that goes all the way to the top.  The gradient of the road is relatively constant, so it’s easy to establish a constant pace and “just go” all the way to the top.  You’ll want to stop, though, for the many, many views almost all the way up.

  1. Hi Brian, I agree, once I set s pace I wanted to just keep going but the views kept distracting me. I’m looking for a partner to backpack Mount Rose. Interested?

  2. Hi, Esteban. Thanks for the offer to do Mt Rose. Sorry, but that one’s way too brutal for me, so I’ll have to decline. Good luck!
