We started at 7:30 am on an overcast day in hopes to beat the heat. Park on the road and walk down to the campground. The trailhead is near campsite 35. Plenty of really clean restrooms there so take advantage!

The first mile of the trail leads through thick gamble oak, then you reach an opening and intersection of trails. The mosquitoes there were intense, but nothing compared to the flies once you reach the saddle ad upper third of the trail. I suppose it’s because of the wildflowers?

The hike along the ridge has very rewarding views of the valley, Salt Lake and the surrounding mountains. There was a nice breeze which unfortunately did not keep the flies at bay … we have never left a peak this quickly … no time to drink or take a break.

Other than one lone trail runner we did not encounter any other hikers. I would recommend trying this hike later in the season when the biting flies are less relentless.
