Santiago & Modjeska Peaks via Maple Springs Road. Elevation gain: 4,500 ft. Total mileage: 23.5. A virtual unintended marathon! Peak #7 of #sixpackofpeaks. Goal is to bag all 12 peaks by year end.
I started at the gate at the Maple Springs Visitor Center. Gate was locked so it added at least 6 miles to the hike. The entire hike was unremarkable as it was entirely on fire roads. The views were spectacular. The summit itself is a little pile of rocks next to a radio tower.
Modjeska is primitive and undeveloped; it has no signage and no summit marker. Its only redeeming quality is the spectacular views of snow-capped Mts San Jacinto and San Gorgonio off to the East at the hairpin turn on the descent.
