Today I hiked to the summit of Mount Umunhum, one of the most recognizable peaks in the southern Santa Cruz Mountains. The trail climbs steadily through grasslands and oak woodland before opening to sweeping views that, on a clear day, stretch across the Bay Area, the Diablo Range, and beyond.

The hike itself is moderately strenuous, with enough elevation gain to remind you that every scenic overlook must eventually be paid for in sweat. The weather was pleasant, the trail was in good condition, and the summit rewards the effort with expansive panoramic views and the iconic radar tower standing watch over the landscape.

My only challenge was remembering the mountain’s name afterward.

I spent most of the hike repeating “Mount Umunhum” to myself like Ash trying to remember Klaatu Barada Nikto. By the time I reached the summit, I was pretty confident it was Mount Um…Umu…Umun…Nickel? Necktie? Nectar? Something like that. Fortunately, unlike Ash, I managed to reach the top without accidentally unleashing an army of the dead.

Overall, a beautiful hike, excellent views, and a mountain name that feels less like a place and more like an ancient incantation you’re absolutely not supposed to mispronounce.

“Mount Umunhum… Umunhum… Umunhum…”

Because everybody knows what happens when you forget the last word.
