Mt Wilson In Record Time!
Also on this hike
Perfect weather for my third time summiting Mt. Whitney! Cool enough that sitting still for too long might warrant a jacket, but once I got moving the coolness helped manage my body heat quite nicely. Bugs were a nuisance until I applied a small amount of insect repellant and they were no longer a problem.
Of all my times hiking this trail, I am pretty sure this was my best time yet. Not that it’s a race, but I am trying to increase my fitness and speed in preparation for a Mt Whitney day hike in August so I’m happy when I see pace improvements this hiking season. We got to the trailhead right at 6 AM and we were glad we did as we got a decent parking spot right before dozens of cars started pouring into the lot. By the time we got back to the trail there was a line of cars waiting for others to leave. This is a popular weekend area so it’s best to get here super early on Saturdays and Sundays.
Whitney is perhaps my favorite hike of the Six Pack because of all the flowing water and green foliage/tree cover. My feet were killing me on the way down from the summit but I’m pretty sure this was due to a lack of arch support in my insoles. I swapped out my boots this week and purchased new insoles — I am confident this issue will be eliminated on future hikes.
Great trail!
