O’Leary Peak Trail was the perfect choice after a hard day’s floundering around on Humphreys. An easy Forest Service cinder track takes you all the way up to the lookout tower. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and the Humphreys massif are points of interest dominating the hike. Took 2.5 hours to get to the Lookout. Chatted with the friendly Forest Service Ranger for about 20 minutes but he wasn’t inclined to invite me to the viewing platform, nor did I ask. Plenty of stunning viewpoints around the tower. The descent was an easy stroll and the sun increased in strength. Back at the car by 9:30am.
