As 10 mile summit hikes go, this one really isn’t too bad. Its a fire road nearly all of the way and a good amount of shade and the overall incline gain is pretty reasonable. The first couple miles are fairly steep though, so we were glad to do em first thing in the morning when it was nice and cool. Be sure to get the online permit the night before – the attendant isn’t there until 8.

The summit area is really cool. There’s kind of two summit attractions- the old 100 year old fire tower where there are some great rocks to sit on and soak up the views while you eat your summit king sized candy bar (at least that is our tradition). But then the real summit has this crazy ladder/rope climbing thing up to a huge boulder where all the signs are and stuff. Pretty fun and views are killer.

Weather was perfect – breezy enough to keep the bugs in check and also cool you off. We saw a baby snake but no deer. Great overall hike – recommended!
