San Gorgonio – Overnight
Also on this hike
First time backpacking in a while. It was fun dusting of the gear and sleeping under the stars without the drone of RVs and inebriated late night cackles. We hiked to Halfway Camp and settled in for the day. I would have preferred to summit the first day, but it was fun hanging around camp, making up games to fill the time, and getting stung by yellow jackets (don’t climb on the giant downed tree, there’s a nest on top just past the fort). A bobcat came strolling through the camp, took a small siesta, before disappearing back into the woods. I was hoping for more wildlife and strange noises at night but the forest was dead quiet except for the brief hoot of an owl. Morning came quick with the sound of a gazillion bees and a swollen leg from yesterday’s encounter. The peak came quick with very few people at the top and the way down was longer than the way up as usual, but always a great time, ending with California King Snake sitting near the parking lot
