Warning Chantry Flats – Might have to take the Old Mt. Wilson Trail
This was supposed to be from Sturtevant to Mt. Wilson, but got to Chantry Flats at 6:30 AM, and the parking lot was already full, with people already driving down. In addition to that, they have made parking on the side of the roads all no parking/tow away zones. So parking at Chantry flats is now extremely limited. I heard 60 spots, or more if you pay at Adam’s Pack Station. So get there extremely early if looking to do this hike.
As for the hike. Trail up to Orchard is in great condition. Once you get past that, there are sections that the storms have done damage too. Especially as you get to the last section towards the top. Bugs were out in areas. And the last turn, before you get to Manzanita Peak and the bench, there is a bee hive with agressive bees in the burnt out tree next to the trail. They will attack anyone and everyone that walks by. So go with haste past that point.
Other than that, the cafe at the top was closed, but is supposed to open soon. Restrooms and water stations were all open. Used a full 3 liters on the hike. My Garmin said it was a 15 mile round trip hike, with 5,000 feet of ascent.
