Wildlife Bonanza on Tam
Also on this hike
Summer like temperatures in mid March made this for a little more challenging of a day than usual, but also the most wildlife I’d ever seen on the hike in one day. Started with a little deer greeting us at the parking lot. Saw a couple of banana slugs on the Steep Ravine trail. Lots of lizards once we passed Pantoll. Had a jack rabbit race past us just before the inn and a chipmunk have its lunch next to me while i ate my sandwich at the fire lookout. On the way down we encounter a good sized gopher snake along the plank section. Just before making it back to the inn we had a coyote racing ahead of us down the trail. On the Matt Davis trail we came across a few more chipmunks, a garter snake and just before the end of the trail, a small rattle snake! Lots of butterflies the whole way and lots of wild flowers, especially on the lower end of the Matt Davis trail. Everything is pretty dry on the trail, the creeks are all pretty low but still flowing. As we left the summit at about 1pm it was already 83 degrees with no wind, so it only got hotter as we continued down. Was very much looking forward to an ice cold drink and a burger after the hike, but everything was closed, so had to wait till we crossed over to Marin and enjoyed some much needed In-n-Out instead
