I have registered for the challenge, booked Airbnb’s at key spots. I have not hiked since before the pandemic, prior to that I was pretty avid. I did the Oregon section of the PCT, and have done many gorge hikes, coastal range hikes, and forest hikes throughout Oregon. My husband and I plan to do Mt. Sutton on Saturday this week March 22. We will be going slow and steady and I am hoping it’s not too muddy!

    Fantastic!

It’s early season for many of the peaks — especially with the snow we’ve had the past week — but Sutton is a great starting point.

I’ve hiked it in February and March. My best advice? Shoot for an early start. Temperatures drop below freezing overnight and everything solidifies. If it’s going to be at or below freezing, that keeps the mud from thawing (much).

And be sure to stop at Tiger Town Brewing in nearby Mitchell. They have great food and even (sometimes) a Sutton Mountain IPA to celebrate.

What are your other dates? I’m based in Bend and will be hiking the Central Oregon challenge as well. If our schedules align and you’d like company, maybe we can hike together.
