This marks the first year of the permit and quota system for the Devil’s Lake trailhead up South Sister (and most other alternate trailheads you might consider for South Sister). There is a limit of 50 day hikers per day up that trail, and you’ll need to get a permit in advance. The are $1 per person, and some are reservable six months in advance, some 7 days in advance.

South Sister is the only peak in the challenge that has a trailhead quota, so learn more and get it on your calendar!

This has been updated for 2022!

Advance permits are required from June 15th to October 15th. The forest service has increased the day use quota for the Devil’s Lake trailhead to 100 people per day, and improved the permit process. Day-use permits will be released in two rolling windows: 10 days and then two days before the trip date. Online permit request form (begins June 5, 2022).
