Cucamonga Peak
February 8th, 2020
3 take aways from this hike; and then some:
- Snow past the saddle, so many people stopped here and went back because they perhaps thought it was doable without spikes. Yup definitely need spikes, we used crampons which helped us out so much, everyone I saw used crampons so be safe.
- North facing side of mountains have a lot of snow. That means the last mile there is hardly a trail. Because there is hardly a trail the last mile, you must climb it up and skip the switchbacks. It is doable, but thanks to my partner Brennan he lead the way and helped me through it.
- The weather was nice on Saturday, a little windy at the Saddle, but it was almost a perfect day. I know sunday (the following day) it snowed. That means, just be mindful of the sunrise, sunset, wind speeds throughout the day. This will help you understand your situation and whether to keep going or go back.
Extra notes:
- I started at 620am, summited around 10am, finished around 1230pm.
- Plenty of dogs up until the saddle, no dogs past the saddle to the summit 🙁
- Good amount of streams along the trail to fill up for water
