This was a very enjoyable hike! Even with all the snow we encountered! We figured all of the snow had finally melted off to be able to get up here and do this safely, but then the area got some snow Friday night…surprise!
Did this with my hubby. We started just before 6:00am, a beautiful morning in the brisk 30's. We were met with snow on the trail at about 1/2 a mile in to the hike. Noticed a good number of animal tracks and they weren't just dog prints! Keep an eye out….you may have eyes on you as you're enjoying this beautiful hike and scenery.
As we continued on, the snow started to get about 3-4 inches, covering the trail through gradual incline of switchbacks. The trekking poles definitely helped, but we were not fully prepared for a completely covered trail as we continued on. Once the trail was completely covered and certain areas started to get about a foot deep or more, we had to refer to our All Trails app to see where the trail was. At this point, we were less than a mile and a half from getting to the peak. We really wanted to push on, but also wanted to be smart about it and not having snow shoes, we would have been drenched and freezing from under our knees down. We decided to go to higher ground along the ridgeline, just so we could visually see how far we were from Fletcher and that was tough to see it in our reach and not be able to go any further. Oh well! We'll be back for sure once the snow melts!
It was definitely doable with snow shoes and would have been a blast doing it that way as well! But we obviously weren't prepared for the snow that dumped the higher elevation areas just overnight. I'm sure it will be melted off pretty quick with these warmer temperatures this week so the snow shouldn't be an issue for long. It was already melting off as we came back down with the sun shining down on us! Gorgeous day out!
Side note, there is no signage near this North Loop trailhead or anywhere else that we could see that shows you are on the trail to Fletcher Peak. You are on the correct trail though heading on the North Loop trail. Just mentioning this because we had a lady ask us if she was on the right trail to Fletcher Peak as she didn't see any trail signs showing “Fletcher Peak”.
Amazing hike! Amazing views! Really enjoyed this one! We'll be back for you Fletcher!
